The Council passed a Notice in Motion in September 2023, cancelling the Council’s climate accounting contract and stopping development of Kaipara’s climate policy. The Council will consult on the Climate Smart programme as part of the 2024-2027 Long Term Plan. The work outlined below has been paused until then.
Council adopted two greenhouse gas emissions targets:
1. Reduce Council’s organisational emissions by 30% by 2031 (compared to 2018-2019 baseline)
2. Achieve net zero Council emissions by 2050.
These targets are for Council as an organisation. The 2031 target is an interim target to ensure action and that Council is on track to net zero by 2050.
A staff Climate Action Group has been established to lead the creation and implementation of the Climate Action Plan. This internal group is made up of staff from different areas of Council, as climate change impacts all parts of Council.
The Climate Action Plan sets out a plan for Council to meet these targets. The Climate Action Plan commits Council to short, medium- and long-term actions to reduce emissions and grow resilience.
The Plan has two parts. Phase One is operative, focused on ‘getting our own house in order’. Phase Two actions will be identified with the wider Kaipara community, Mana Whenua partners and Tangata Whenua.
Climate change working group identifies short term and medium term, in-house actions.
Internal actions are approved by Council.
Engagement on long term, community actions begins.
Full Climate Action Plan drafted and finalised.
Climate Action Plan is adopted.
Each year, Council measures the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced through our activities and services. The GHG emissions reports show how the Climate Action Plan is working and how we are tracking with reducing our emissions.
