Tamariki exploring the outdoors in Whakapirau
- October 29, 2024
Get out, get active, and play!
What does play look like for your whānau? Play Week Aotearoa is running from 26 October to 1 November and is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to step outdoors, embrace play, and enjoy the beautiful parks, playgrounds, and wide open spaces right here in Kaipara.
Led by Sport New Zealand, Play Week highlights the importance of play in not only tamariki (children) and rangatahi (young people) lives but for all ages. Allowing time to experience fun and freedom is vital for your wellbeing while also building a lifelong love of being active.
Get out – explore nature play in our parks
Our parks and reserves here in Kaipara are perfect for nature play, offering spaces where you can run free, explore, and connect with the environment. Northern Wairoa Memorial Park, Taharoa Domain, Mangawhai Community Park and Selwyn Park are just some of the larger public spaces that you can explore and connect. There are local parks and reserves right across the district.
Did you know: Northern Wairoa Memorial Park in Dargaville was established in 1919 and is just over 15 hectares. It has facilities for many different sports as well as a Kahikatea Forest, home of Kahikatea trees centuries old.
Get active – recreation opportunities await
Kaipara is also brimming with recreational activities to keep you active! Head to Harding Park to mountain bike, explore the 4km Ruawai Stopbank Trail or Kaihu Valley Trail, walk one of the many scenic tracks around the district, and so much more. There are tons of activities such as walking, hiking, cycling groups, and waka ama organised and run by local groups dedicated to maximising open spaces.
And play… in our libraries too!
It’s not just our parks that inspire play and creativity—our libraries are vital community hubs promoting learning, imagination, and connection. Whether you’re looking for a cosy reading nook, borrowing resources from the TUTU collection (like a telescope and a sewing machine!), or utilising the online services to access eBooks and magazines, our libraries offer something for everyone. Participate in engaging community events or over Play Week the library has Play passports available to inspire you to explore your backyard (if you aren’t able to make it to the library download here). Plus, our libraries are open on Saturdays, making it easy for everyone to enjoy these valuable resources during the weekend.
Tamariki outside the Dargaville Library. Games at Northland field days.
This Play Week, get out, get active, and celebrate the wonderful parks and libraries here in Kaipara. Let’s embrace the joy of play!
