New toilet facilities for Pahi were opened this week (Wednesday 18 December) with a ribbon cutting by Deputy Mayor Jonathan Larsen.
The old toilet facility was tired and well past its functional life, with a disposal system in poor condition. The new clean, modern toilets are wheelchair accessible with baby changing facilities and will cater for the many wharf users, boaties, campground visitors and locals, particularly during the summer months when tourist numbers increase.
The project team worked closely with the Pahi Boat Club, Pahi Community Hall Committee, Pahi Domain Society, Te Uri o Hau Environs, and Department of Conservation (DOC) to determine the design and location. Physical construction was carried out by Ventia.
Feedback from the community saw the final look of the loos draw on heritage-inspiration, with a pitched corrugated iron roof, verandah, and panelling in keeping with the Pahi Hall next door.
The work was supported with a grant from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund (TIF), with the remainder of the project cost debt funded. The new toilets are supported by a wastewater holding tank and a water tank. Works to be completed in the new year include removal of the old toilet block. Funding has been allocated in the Long Term Plan 2024 – 2027 to design and construct a wastewater disposal field, the second phase of the project.
