New facilities to meet Pine Beach camper demand
New facilities are on the cards for Pine Beach campground at Taharoa Domain.
At the December council meeting, elected members considered a recommendation from Taharoa Domain Governance Committee to address the undersupply of public toilet and showers at Pine Beach campground, by constructing additional facilities.
Council approved the recommendation, giving the go-ahead for staff to plan for an additional six toilets, six showers, and two wash-hand basins at Pine Beach campground.
The facilities would ensure Pine Beach campground meets camper demand and is compliant with the Camping-Ground Regulations 1985. The project will be considered for funding in the Long Term Plan (LTP) 2024/2027.
Kaipara District Council General Manager Hayley Worthington says the new facilities would reduce operating costs at the campground in the long term.
“New facilities mean there would no longer be a need to hire and operate portaloos or obtain exemptions from Camping-Ground regulations,” says Hayley. “There’s always a risk we may not be granted an exemption.”
The cost to build new facilities is proposed to be loan funded in year two of the LTP 2024/2027.
If approved, new facilities at Pine Beach would only be for camper use and installation would be part of a wider project, which includes an upgrade of the existing wastewater system and an upgrade of day visitor toilets. The upgrade of day visitor toilets will largely be funded by the Tourism Infrastructure Fund (TIF). Upgrade of the existing central wastewater system would be loan funded.
